The mountain gorilla is a subspecies of the eastern gorillas listed under the endangered species by the International Union For Conservation of Nature (IUCN)- an international organization that deals with nature conservation and eco-friendly use of natural resources. Bwindi National Park is home to over half the population of mountain gorillas in Uganda with up to 459 individuals recorded and up to 20 gorilla families habituated for visitors. Mgahinga National Park is home to only one gorilla family called Nyakagezi which has 9 individuals.
A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs US$ 700 per person for foreign non-residents, US$ 600 for foreign residents and UGX 250,000 per person for East African citizens.
