Mount Elgon National Park

Situated 235 km east of Kampala on the Kenya-Uganda border is another amazing mountain park – Mount Elgon National park. Named after Mount Elgon, an extinct shield volcano on the border, the national park is the best substitute for Mountain Rwenzori for travelers looking for an adventure mountain hiking experience in Uganda. Mountain Elgon whose highest peak is Wagagai is regarded as the oldest extinct volcano in East Africa.

Wildlife– Mount Elgon national park is also home to a variety of lowland and montane forest mammal species including elephants, buffaloes, hyenas, leoprads plus a variety of small antelopes and duikers not to mention monkey species that include black and white colobus monkeys, blue and red-tailed monkeys. The park is also home to over 300 bird species which can be spotted during mountain treks and community visits.

There are plenty of exciting activities to do in Mount Elgon National Park top of the list being mountain climbing to Wagagai Peak, mountain biking, Sipi Falls trek, cultural encounters with Sabiny, rock climbing & abseiling, coffee plantation tours, cave trips among others all done on foot.
